First Weeks Thoughts

I am enjoying the time I spend in the classroom immensely.  I just wish I had more time to work with my students.  Does anyone else feel like they don’t have enough time in the classroom?  At home? At work?  Sometimes I feel that being pulled in so many directions makes me less valuable to each of the children, but then I think how I might be making a difference to just one of them.

I think we each have so much to offer these students.  Whether it’s reading with them, going over math facts, or just eating lunch with them.  We have experiences and gifts that can be used to help them achieve their goals.  We can learn so much from them, as well, if we allow them to teach us.

I think, on those days when I feel like I am spreading thin, I will remember that it only takes a small gesture to make a huge impression.  I will think back to the teacher that had the greatest impact on me and strive to be more like her.

  1. yes, I feel that way everyday that I go. It seems that there is not enough time to get around to every student. I have to consciously make sure that I interact with each child in my classroom and with 19 students that can be damn near impossible, it scares me to think of what I would do if my class or my student teaching class is, and probably will be, larger. I am not working right now but I can relate because of all the other semesters before this that I did work and it is hard to balance work, school, and do not forget home. Home is almost a dream for my, unlike you I have all grown children but iI miss my grandchildren so much because we have such a tight bond between us. I sometimes think that there is not enough of me to go around and please do not even think about time for yourself unless you want a bomb to go off in your head! smile. I like that you mentioned the fact that not only do our students learn from us but they also teach us a thing or two or three.

  2. Part of teaching is learning to "go the distance." The more you teach the more you will adjust to the rigorous schedule. The fatigue that you mention is not unusual. As you grow in your craft, you will also get better at individualizing instruction despite the numbers.

No matter what you do in life, you will be tired. I like to think that teaching "is the good kind of tired" that comes from deep satisfaction and pursuing that which you love.

  3. I can totally relate to that feeling. I'm amazed at how much you guys can handle. Sometimes the things that keep me going are the fact that post of the people in this class have another job, kids, other various responsibilities to fulfill and I only have this to concentrate on. I am truly inspired by the work you all do and the commitment you've made to this at such a busy stage in your lives. I think one thing that is important to remind ourselves of is the rewards that wait for us once this program is over. Sometimes that in itself is hard to do because it seems that overall goal is such a dim light in our very distance future. When I get overwhelmed by that I try and take at least a minute at the end of the day to think of the important parts that the kids will remember. I guess feeling discouraged or feeling torn from every angle is a part of the process, and when you're a full fledged certified no monkey business real life teacher, you will be hundreds of miles ahead of the game, everyone around you won't even know that they're playing ;) Keep your spirits high and remember what we're there for! The kids have no choice in this but we do. That's what I try to remind myself!

  4. OMG! Thank You! Thank you for saying whats on everyones mind! I can absolutly relate! However, I do not feel like I'm less valuable. I realize that I have alot to offer, and you do too! Sometimes when we're pulled in so many directions its becasue we have the strength that most others don't. We have the ability to bounce back, keeping shape and form no matter how far we're stretched! We are looked upon as the matriarchs and not many know how we feel! Always remember when you feel that way that many of us out there are being stretched, pulled, and probed...ehhhe

You do a great job, Mrs. organization!
